Topic 2: Importing Models - Using ActorX

[This is post is part of a series of tutorials.]

Topic 2: Importing Models - Using ActorX

Now we're going to be using the ActorX script that we just downloaded. Also, I'm going to be working with the Jack files extracted from the previous steps, but the process is the same for whoever/whatever meshes you're importing.

  • Open up 3ds Max.
  • Click on MaxScript up at the top.
  • Click "Run Script..."
  • Open up "ActorXImporter.ms" from wherever you put it.

A new dialog box opens up. It has various settings for things, but I just use all the defaults. They work just dandy for me. Now, we're going to import!

First, let's import Jack's body.

  • Click "Import PSK..." (Note: Don't confuse that with PSA, those are animations, which are different. Lol. I sometimes do that by accident...still.)
  • Navigate to your CookedPC into BioH_Convict_00.
  • Go into SkeletalMesh (Note: Also, don't confuse SkeletalMesh and StaticMesh.)
  • Click the file HMF_JCK_LGTa_MDL.psk and click open.

Check THAT out. It's the surly but lovable Subject Zero's headless body! Just standin' around in your 3D world waiting for you to something exciting and/or inappropriate quite possibly. Endless possibilities!

The possibilities are even more endless-er when she has a head, so do the same steps again with importing the .psk and import HMF_HED_PROJack_MDL.psk, which is her head model.

The characters differ in terms of how many models they are split up into.

  • Quarians are one full model.
  • Krogans, Salarians, Asari, and Turians are generally two models (heads and bodies).
  • Humans are often three pieces (head, body, and hair).
  • Shepard's armor alone is four pieces (torso, legs, shoulders, and arms), then add another three for head, hair, and helmet, making seven pieces for one character.

So, yeah, it varies, and you just have to import and see!

Welp, we have Jack, but there's only so much excitement one can get from looking at a grey Jack. She's gotta have her beautiful tattoos, right? Rightio, friend. So, check out the next topic for texturing! Woo!
