[Explosive Dawn] Fall, Week 3 - Building a Foundation

Greetings,

It's Week 3. While the temperature outside is beginning to drop, things are heating up at school (not just because of broken AC). Assignments and projects for classes are starting up. However, we're still making headway with our game, of course. We've also added two other potential concepts after more clearly defining what we previously had. These came from a brainstorming session we had with the entire team, which was very beneficial. We got a LOT of ideas. They ranged from particle tower defense to...weddings...to "guys who go 'RAH!' and get power." Needless to say, we've got a rather creative bunch.

One of our ideas is to use the particles as an indicator of density, and we'd have a sort of ninja kind of character hopping over water in these denser areas in order to get from point A to B. Another idea we have is to have a bird flying through stars (particles), and the player would be able to control the effect that the particles have on the bird. Both are pretty vague, but we liked both of them. Also, it cured my desire of having at least one more concept.

For us designers, our next step is to begin prototyping something in paper. We've both got at least one idea of how to go about this. It's a tricky thing because our game is heavily based on the physics. We thought about just doing a digital prototype, but unfortunately, there are no libraries available that would do what our physics is going to do. However, that's what being a designer is all about, working around these kinds of challenges and thinking up creative solutions. I'm sure we'll figure out something.

The engine is coming together more and more everyday. I have confidence that come time for the milestone it will be satisfactory--even if not stellar. The foundations are important, but if we don't ace Engine Proof that in no way means we're going to have a failing game. With two designers, I believe that we will have a quality project.

Anyway, just a brief post this week, I'm afraid. I've got other design projects at the moment that require my attention. We plan on doing a lot of work this weekend towards the game, so that should yield some substantial progress. That's all for now! Peace.

Sincerely,
Alicia Yeargin.
