[Explosive Dawn] Spring, Week 1 - A New Beginning

Greetings,

Little Black Dress Productions has hit the ground running after the holidays. We already have a few pretty major changes to report on.

We lost a programmer. However, we gained three new programmers in his place. This means that this game has upped its standards significantly as far as what is going to come out of it. We now have five programmers on the team, which necessitates the implementation of networking. So, we'll have online multiplayer modes. The details of which are currently vague, but we've got some good ideas brewing.

As far as the tech is concerned, we're fixing up the engine since we've got a new wealth of programming brain at our disposal. We're adding support for Xbox 360 game controllers, and we're getting our graphics ready for the special visual effects we have planned. The necessaries for networking are also starting to be laid out. This game is being ripped apart (technologically speaking), but once it's put back together, it'll be a whole new beast.

We're also changing up the style completely, as mentioned before. We are going forward with the calligraphic style. It's done in a more Eastern, oriental style of brush calligraphy, which is a great style to work with. Its very nature incorporates so much, giving us quite a bit to work with. One of the things we're planning is ink trails left by the player ship.

I have already begun to create art for the game. We've yet to acquire an artist and currently do not have any plans to do so. My art is not professional quality, but my team and I think it looks attractive enough. I spent my holiday learning how to use Photoshop and Illustrator in order to produce art of a much higher quality. Below are the very first bits of art I have to share. I used Photoshop to create the parchment background. Then, I used Illustrator to do everything else. I'm loving Illustrator the more I use it.

Main Menu Mock-Up

HUD Mock-Ups (Click for Full Size). Left side of each is for score or power, top right of each is health.

Left: Player, items, bullets. Right: Enemies.

That's pretty much all I've got so far for art to share. I started to dig around in the school library of sound for new sounds. I have over about two dozen sound effects to replace. Also, I've been tasked with coming up with music, so that's something I'll be attempting. I'm planning on using the school's sound room, as it is equipped with GarageBand, which I have been shown before. I'm hoping I can create something with an oriental flare that can match the style well. Wish me luck! (I've never done music before! Eeps.)

Hopefully I'll get my art assets into the game by next week, and we should have more of a plan of what we're going to do with the game. We may change the name and game team (once again). We're not sure yet. Also, I hope I'll have some sound and maybe even the beginning of some music. See you then. Peace!

Sincerely,
Alicia Yeargin.
